Alcohol calculator
Estimate your blood alcohol level in per mille, how long it takes to sober up and when you drop below the 0.2 ‰ driving limit. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Level of intoxication
| 0–0.2 ‰ | Sober or minimal Practically no effect. You may drive only once the level is below 0.2 ‰. |
|---|---|
| 0.2–0.5 ‰ | Mild effect Slower reactions and less self-criticism. In Estonia driving at this level is already prohibited. |
| 0.5–1.5 ‰ | Light intoxication Muscles relax, mood lifts, you become talkative and active, concentration gets worse. |
| 1.5–2.5 ‰ | Moderate intoxication Slurred speech, poor coordination, possible irritability and short memory gaps. |
| 2.5–3 ‰ | Heavy intoxication Loss of coordination, confused speech, possible memory loss and loss of consciousness. |
| 3–5 ‰ | Alcohol poisoning Life-threatening. Call 112 for help. |
| > 5.0 ‰ | Potentially fatal level A level that can be fatal. Call an ambulance on 112 immediately. |
How the calculator works
- 1Widmark formulaPer mille = pure alcohol (g) / (weight × r). Pure alcohol = volume (ml) × strength (%) / 100 × 0.789.
- 2Body water factor rCalculated with the Seidl formula from your sex, weight and height. On average r is about 0.7 for men and about 0.6 for women.
- 3Empty or full stomachOn an empty stomach about 90% of the alcohol is absorbed, after a meal about 70%, so the peak is lower and comes later.
- 4Sobering upThe body breaks down about 0.15 per mille an hour on average. Coffee, a cold shower or sleep do not speed it up.
The result is an estimate, not evidence, and does not replace a breathalyser. The rate at which alcohol is broken down varies from person to person. The calculator is for adults (18+). Drinking too much harms your health.
Frequently asked questions
How many per mille is one beer?
A 0.5 l bottle of 5% beer gives an 80 kg man about 0.3 and a 60 kg woman about 0.5 per mille. The calculator gives an exact estimate for your weight and height.

On average about 0.15 per mille an hour, so 1 per mille takes roughly 6–7 hours.
When can I drive after drinking?
In Estonia only when your blood alcohol is below 0.2 per mille. The calculator shows an estimate, but only a breathalyser can tell you for sure.
Does the calculator save my data?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
