In short: AI advertising is advertising inside or next to an AI answer: a sponsored box below the answer in ChatGPT, a highlighted recommendation in Google AI Mode, a virtual showroom in Copilot. It is matched to the whole conversation rather than a single keyword. Platforms need it to pay for expensive compute and keep free tiers free. For businesses it is a chance to reach people at the moment of decision, but measurement is limited and trust is fragile.
In 2026 ads arrived in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Copilot. Many business owners ask: what exactly is it, how does it work and do I need it? Here is what we know about AI advertising right now – without the sales pitch.
What is AI advertising?
AI advertising is a paid message shown inside or next to the answer of an AI assistant or AI search. Unlike a regular search ad, the user does not see ten links – they see one answer. The ad has to fit that context, be clearly labelled and must not change the answer itself.
Which formats already exist?
- A sponsored box below the answer (ChatGPT): a separate unit labelled “Sponsored” with a headline, text, image and link.
- Ads above, below or inside AI Overviews (Google): regular search and shopping ads.
- A highlighted answer in recommendation lists (Google AI Mode): a relevant ad appears in a list such as “best running shoes”.
- Ads in follow-up questions (Google AI Mode in the US since 28.10.2026): the ad follows the conversation, not just the first query.
- Offers and promo codes (Google Direct Offers, with AI Max campaigns).
- A virtual showroom and brand agent (Microsoft Copilot Showroom ads): the user explores a product and asks questions without visiting a landing page.
- Sponsored prompts (Amazon Rufus): a suggested follow-up question that leads to a specific brand.
How does AI advertising work?
1. Targeting: context, not keywords
In regular Google Ads you buy a keyword. In AI advertising the system reads the whole conversation: what the person wants, their budget, whether they are comparing or ready to buy. ChatGPT matches ads on the conversation context, language and general location. Google AI Mode ads come from existing campaigns, with AI Max and broad match helping to match them.
2. Data: product feed and landing page
AI needs structured information: a product feed (Merchant Center), prices, availability and a clear landing page. OpenAI requires landing pages to be crawlable and to load. The clearer your information, the easier it is for AI to show you in the right place.
3. Pricing: auction, CPC or CPM
In ChatGPT Ads Manager you can bid per click (CPC) or per thousand impressions (CPM), and self-serve has no minimum spend. Google uses the usual Google Ads auction. Amazon Rufus Sponsored Prompts are paid per click.
4. Privacy and restrictions
- Advertisers do not see conversations, only aggregated data.
- OpenAI does not show ads to under-18s or next to sensitive topics (health, mental health, politics).
- In Europe ChatGPT does not offer personalised ads at launch.
- Google excludes adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare and political ads from AI Overviews.
5. Measurement
This is the biggest weakness of AI advertising. Google has no separate AI Mode report, and you cannot target or exclude the AI Overviews placement. ChatGPT offers a Conversions API, but the data is aggregated. That makes your own analytics (GA4, conversions, consent management) more important than ever.
Why does AI advertising exist?
For the platform
An AI answer costs far more than a classic search result, because every answer uses compute. Most users do not pay for a subscription. Ads keep the free tier free. OpenAI said ChatGPT ads reached a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days.
For businesses
Someone who asks AI “which WooCommerce payment plugin works in Estonia?” is already making a decision. According to OpenAI, roughly one ChatGPT query in five has direct commercial intent. AI advertising lets you be visible at exactly that moment – even when your site is not cited in the answer.
For users
A good ad can be useful: a concrete offer, a discount or the chance to explore a product right away. A bad one erodes trust – which is exactly why Perplexity dropped ads.
Risks and limitations
- Trust: if users suspect the answer was bought, everyone loses.
- Small volume: Amazon Rufus ads, for example, currently deliver only a fraction of regular ad volume.
- Little control: placements cannot always be targeted or excluded.
- Restricted sectors: finance, health and legal are often prohibited outside the US.
- Availability: Google AI Mode ads are not available in Estonia yet.
How can a business in Estonia prepare for AI advertising?
- Clean up your product feed and structured data – prices, availability, delivery.
- Build landing pages that answer one question and load fast.
- Set up conversion tracking (GA4, Consent Mode, server-side tracking).
- Test ChatGPT ads with a small budget and compare against Google Ads.
- Build organic AI visibility: the ad sits below the answer, a citation sits inside it. Read AI visibility vs SEO.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI advertising?
A paid message shown inside or next to the answer of an AI assistant or AI search, for example in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode or Copilot. It is labelled and must not change the answer.
Do ads influence AI answers?
According to the platforms’ rules, no. OpenAI and Google keep ads separate from answers and label them. User trust is the basis of their business model.
How is AI advertising targeted?
Mainly by the context of the conversation rather than single keywords, plus language, general location and, at Google, existing campaigns and product feeds.
Is AI advertising worth testing for a small business?
Yes, if your sector is not restricted and measurement is in place. ChatGPT Ads Manager has no minimum spend, so you can start with a small test.
