In short: SEO in 2026 is not a new discipline, but its centre of gravity has moved. According to figures shared at Google I/O 2026, AI Mode has over a billion monthly users, AI Overviews appear on about half of tracked queries, Search Console now reports AI search impressions and ads have arrived in AI answers. The foundation – technical health, helpful content and trust – is unchanged. What is new is that success is also measured by whether AI cites you.

At the start of every year clients ask the same thing: “Does SEO work differently now?” In 2026 the question is fair. A lot changed, but most of it does not cancel the old work – it adds a new layer on top. Here is how SEO in 2026 differs from 2025 and what it means for a business website in Estonia.

The short answer: has SEO changed?

Yes, but not the way headlines claim. “SEO is dead” is as wrong in 2026 as it always was. Google’s own guidance says that to appear in AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) no special optimisation is required: the same SEO fundamentals apply. What changed is where you are seen and how results are measured.

1. AI search moved from experiment to mainstream

In 2025 Google’s AI Overviews expanded to more than 200 countries and AI Mode launched in the US as a separate conversational search. Many businesses still saw it as an experiment.

In 2026 the picture is different:

The takeaway: some of your potential customers get their answer before they reach your website. Read more in Google AI Overviews mean fewer clicks.

2. Clicks are no longer the only metric

On 3 June 2026 Google added generative AI performance reports to Search Console. They show how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features – by page, country, device and date. By 31 August the reports had reached every site.

An important detail: the main metric is impressions. You cannot split AI Overviews from AI Mode, and every link in one AI answer gets the same position. In 2025 there was nothing at all. In 2026 you can officially see, for the first time, whether Google uses your content in AI answers.

3. AI answers now carry more links

On 15 October 2026 Google announced five changes: more inline links placed higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews, a test of an official-sources section for task-based queries, news carousels in more places, and related articles with thumbnails. Google also said use of Preferred Sources has grown more than 7x since the start of the year.

So being cited in an AI answer is worth more than in 2025: it now brings clicks as well.

4. Ads have arrived in AI answers

In 2025 AI answers were almost ad-free. In 2026 that changed:

Organic results get less room, so your content has to be even clearer and more trustworthy.

5. Core updates still punish thin content

The May 2026 core update started on 21 May and took about 12 days. The pattern matches 2024–2025: sites with generic, copied or mass-produced content without added value lose. Google’s spam policies call this scaled content abuse, and it applies to AI-written text too.

Writing with AI is not forbidden. Publishing pointless content at scale is. The difference from 2025: there is far more AI text now, so real experience, your own data and concrete examples stand out even more.

6. Search is no longer just Google

In 2025 ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot were a “nice novelty” for many. In 2026 they are real search channels where people ask things like “who builds websites in Tallinn?”. Their answers lean heavily on search engine indexes, so good SEO helps there too. But what other sites, directories and reviews say about you matters as well. More in AI visibility vs SEO.

What stayed the same?

What to do in 2026: 7 steps

  1. Open the generative AI report in Search Console and see which pages appear in AI answers.
  2. Answer the question at the top of the page – 2–3 sentences, then the details.
  3. Add FAQs and structured data to service and product pages.
  4. Refresh old articles: prices, years, screenshots and sources.
  5. Show real experience: your work, numbers, client stories, the author’s name.
  6. Check what AI says about you: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot about your services.
  7. Keep the technical side healthy – speed, security, updates. See WordPress maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still needed in 2026?

Yes. AI answers rely heavily on search engine indexes, so without SEO AI will not find you either. The metrics and channels changed, not the need.

What is the biggest difference between SEO in 2025 and 2026?

AI search went mainstream, Search Console reports AI impressions and ads arrived in AI answers. Success is now measured by citations as well as clicks.

Does AI-written content hurt SEO?

Not by itself. Google penalises mass-produced content without value, whether a human or AI wrote it. What matters is added value and accuracy.

Can a business in Estonia see AI ads?

ChatGPT ads have been available in Estonia since 24.08.2026. Google AI Mode ads are not available in Estonia yet.
