In short: WordPress 7.2 ships on 8 December 2026 (RC1 on 17 November). It brings Ipsum, a minimal default theme, and wp_kses rebuilt on the HTML API. On a business website, test the update on a copy first and upgrade after the first maintenance release.
WordPress 7.2 is the next major WordPress release, scheduled for 8 December 2026. Beta 1 came out on 20 October and Beta 2 on 27 October, with the first release candidate (RC1) planned for 17 November. Here is what WordPress 7.2 brings, what it means for a business website and how to prepare for the update.
WordPress 7.2 release schedule
- Beta 1: 20 October 2026
- Beta 2: 27 October 2026
- RC1: 17 November 2026
- Final release: 8 December 2026
Scope can still change during the beta: features that are not ready usually move to a later release.
Ipsum, the new default theme
WordPress 7.2 ships with a new default theme, Ipsum. It is an intentionally minimal block theme, a blank canvas to build your own design on. WordPress is also dropping year-based theme names (Twenty Twenty-Five and so on): future default themes get their own names and only change when the design changes.
For a business website this means the default theme no longer needs replacing every year. If your site is built with Elementor or another page builder, Ipsum does not affect it directly.
Changes for developers
- wp_kses is now built on the HTML API. The function that sanitises user-supplied HTML has been rewritten on WordPress’s new HTML parser. XSS protection becomes more precise, but plugins with custom markup handling should be tested.
- Database session change. wpdb strips NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES from WordPress’s own database session by default. Most sites are unaffected, but servers with unusual MySQL settings should check.
- React 19 will most likely land in a later release, not 7.2.
- Safer credential handling and a suggestion mode for editing are also planned for 7.2 according to DreamHost’s overview; the final scope will be clear at RC.
Should you update on 8 December?
For a business website we recommend not installing a major version on day one. Instead:
- create a staging copy of the site and update that first;
- test the theme, page builder (Elementor, Bricks and others), WPML, WooCommerce and forms;
- update after the first maintenance release (7.2.1), once plugin authors have shipped their updates;
- in the meantime, keep installing security updates. See the WordPress 7.1.4 security update.
If you are still on an older branch (for example 6.x), 7.2 is a good moment to plan the upgrade: the longer you wait, the bigger the jump. We can do it safely with our WordPress updates service. If the site also needs a new design or features, see website improvements or WordPress development.
