A new trend in e-commerce is called agentic commerce: a customer tells an AI what they need, and the AI finds products, compares them and helps complete the purchase. The big players have already created standards for it.
What already exists?
- OpenAI and Stripe introduced the Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025, which lets an AI assistant interact with a store.
- Google published its Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026 and is developing shopping directly in AI Mode.
- In spring 2026 OpenAI changed course: purchases no longer happen inside the chat; the AI helps find the product and checkout happens on the merchant’s own site.
The technology is moving fast and not every solution is available in every country yet. But the direction is clear: more and more customers will reach stores through AI recommendations.
What does an AI agent need from your store?
- Accurate product data. Exact name, price, stock, dimensions, material and delivery time. If data is missing, the agent picks a competitor.
- Structured data. Product and Offer markup helps machines understand price and availability.
- A product feed. A Google Merchant Center feed is the foundation that new AI shopping tools also rely on.
- A simple, fast checkout. The fewer steps and surprises, such as hidden delivery costs, the better the purchase works for people and agents alike.
- Clear terms. Delivery, returns and warranty should be written in plain language.
