IT is moving so fast that a password that was safe five years ago can be cracked in minutes today. Graphics cards try billions of combinations per second, breach databases hold billions of real passwords, and AI helps guess the patterns people use. A strong password and changing passwords at the right time are among the simplest ways to protect yourself and your business.
You can create a strong password right now with our free password generator — it runs in your browser and never sends the password anywhere.
Why change your passwords
- Data breaches happen every day. If a service you used has been hacked, your password may already be on attackers’ lists — even if you don’t know it.
- People reuse passwords. One leak opens your email, your bank and your website’s admin panel.
- Old passwords are weak. An 8-character password that once seemed fine is cracked quickly today.
- Staff change. A former employee or contractor may still know shared passwords.
- AI speeds up attacks. Phishing emails are more convincing and password guessing is smarter.
How often should you change passwords?
Changing every password every month makes little sense — it leads to simple, repeated passwords. Far more important is the rule: a long, random, unique password for every account. Change a password immediately:
- if the service has had a breach or you suspect a hack;
- if you’ve shared the password or typed it on someone else’s computer;
- when an employee or contractor leaves;
- if the password is short, simple or used in more than one place.
Your most important accounts — email, bank, website and online store admin, domain and hosting — are worth reviewing at least once or twice a year.
What makes a strong password
- Length: at least 16 characters. Length beats complexity.
- Randomness: no names, birthdays, pets or “Password123!”.
- Mixed characters: upper and lower case, numbers and symbols.
- Uniqueness: one password per account.
- Memorable option: 4–5 random words with separators, like wind-stone-lantern-coffee, are both strong and easy to type.
Our password generator creates three types: random, memorable word-based and PIN. It also shows the password’s strength and an estimated time to crack.
Beyond a strong password
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): even a leaked password isn’t enough to log in.
- Password manager: stores every password encrypted, so you only remember one.
- Don’t send passwords by email or chat. Use a password manager to share them.
- Check for leaks: services like Have I Been Pwned show whether your email has appeared in a breach.
Your business website and passwords
WordPress and online store admin panels are a favourite target for attackers. A weak admin password is one of the most common reasons websites get hacked. As part of our website maintenance we set up 2FA, limit login attempts, review users and help restore a hacked site quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the password generator safe?
Yes. The password is created in your browser with a cryptographically secure random number generator and is never sent or stored anywhere.
Is a long word-based password stronger than a short complex one?
Usually, yes. Four or five random words give more combinations than an 8-character mix and are easier to remember.
Do I need to change passwords every 90 days?
Not necessarily. Uniqueness, length and 2FA matter more. Change a password straight away if you suspect a leak, and review important accounts regularly.
