It brings Ipsum, a minimal default theme, and wp_kses rebuilt on the HTML API. On a business website, test the update on a copy first and upgrade after the first maintenance release.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>WordPress 7.2<\/strong> is the next major WordPress release, scheduled for <strong>8 December 2026<\/strong>. Beta 1 came out on 20 October and Beta 2 on 27 October, with the first release candidate (RC1) planned for 17 November. Here is what WordPress 7.2 brings, what it means for a business website and how to prepare for the update.<\/p>\n<h2>WordPress 7.2 release schedule<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beta 1<\/strong>: 20 October 2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beta 2<\/strong>: 27 October 2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>RC1<\/strong>: 17 November 2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Final release<\/strong>: 8 December 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scope can still change during the beta: features that are not ready usually move to a later release.<\/p>\n<h2>Ipsum, the new default theme<\/h2>\n<p>WordPress 7.2 ships with a new default theme, <strong>Ipsum<\/strong>. It is an intentionally minimal block theme, a blank canvas to build your own design on. WordPress is also dropping year-based theme names (Twenty Twenty-Five and so on): future default themes get their own names and only change when the design changes.<\/p>\n<p>For a business website this means the default theme no longer needs replacing every year. If your site is built with Elementor or another page builder, Ipsum does not affect it directly.<\/p>\n<h2>Changes for developers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>wp_kses is now built on the HTML API.<\/strong> The function that sanitises user-supplied HTML has been rewritten on WordPress&#8217;s new HTML parser. XSS protection becomes more precise, but plugins with custom markup handling should be tested.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Database session change.<\/strong> wpdb strips NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES from WordPress&#8217;s own database session by default. Most sites are unaffected, but servers with unusual MySQL settings should check.<\/li>\n<li><strong>React 19<\/strong> will most likely land in a later release, not 7.2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safer credential handling<\/strong> and a suggestion mode for editing are also planned for 7.2 according to DreamHost&#8217;s overview; the final scope will be clear at RC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Should you update on 8 December?<\/h2>\n<p>For a business website we recommend not installing a major version on day one. Instead:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>create a <strong>staging copy<\/strong> of the site and update that first;<\/li>\n<li>test the theme, page builder (Elementor, Bricks and others), WPML, WooCommerce and forms;<\/li>\n<li>update after the first maintenance release (7.2.1), once plugin authors have shipped their updates;<\/li>\n<li>in the meantime, keep installing <strong>security updates<\/strong>.
